Sea of Stars in IOS

A journey of peril and wonder

Our Site Score

95/100

Sea of Stars is a breathtaking love letter to the golden era of 90s JRPGs, yet it manages to feel entirely modern. It’s rare to find a game that captures the soul of classics like Chrono Trigger or Super Mario RPG while polishing away the clunky mechanics of the past. The turn-based combat is a highlight, featuring a 'timed hit' mechanic that keeps you engaged in every single attack and defense. It turns the traditional 'grind' into a rhythmic dance that feels rewarding every time you land a perfect strike.

The pixel art is arguably some of the best ever produced for the medium, with a dynamic lighting system that makes the world feel vibrant and alive as day transitions to night. But beyond the visuals, it’s the heart of the story that sticks with you. The journey of the Solstice Warriors is filled with genuine wonder, high stakes, and a surprisingly emotional core. It doesn't rely on nostalgia alone; it builds its own legacy. For anyone who craves an epic adventure with a masterful soundtrack and deep, rewarding gameplay, Sea of Stars is a masterpiece.

Dinsun Review

I grew up on the SNES, so I’ve seen my share of 'retro-inspired' RPGs. Most of them are just bad fan fiction. Sea of Stars, however, is the real deal. The pixel art is some of the best I've ever seen, bolstered by a dynamic lighting system that makes every scene feel alive. It doesn't just look like a game from 1995; it looks like what your brain *thinks* 1995 looked like.

The combat is where it really shines. The timed-hit mechanic (à la Super Mario RPG) keeps you engaged in every turn, and the 'lock' system adds a layer of tactical planning that many modern RPGs lack. It's not perfect—the story takes a while to get moving, and the main protagonists are a bit bland compared to the colorful supporting cast—but the overall package is undeniable. It’s a polished, heartfelt adventure that respects the player's time. It’s rare to find a game this sincere in its execution. If you miss the days when RPGs were about wonder and discovery rather than microtransactions and daily logins, this is for you.

Promising the Sabotage touch in every system, Sea of Stars aims to modernize the classic RPG formula in terms of turn-based combat, storytelling, exploration and interactions with the environment, while still offering a hearty slice of nostalgia and good old, simple fun.

It tells the story of two Children of the Solstice who will combine the powers of the sun and moon to perform Eclipse Magic, the only force capable of fending off the monstrous creations of the evil alchemist known as The Fleshmancer.

Traverse seamlessly through the world with a navigation system that breaks free from the classic bound-to-the-grid tileset movement and fight enemies in an immersive take on the genre; no random encounters, no transitions to separate battlefields, and no grinding.

FEATURES

- Engaging turn-based combat: Along with timed hits, combat features combo attacks, boosting, and a strategic "locks" system, all in an immersive take on the genre; no random encounters, no transitions to separate battlefields, and no grinding.

- Full-on dynamic lighting: Our custom-made render pipeline allows the creation of a breathtaking world coming to life by pushing the limits of 2D pixel-art games.

- A story-rich adventure: Sometimes epic, sometimes silly, and other times emotional, Sea of Stars does its RPG duty of exploring classic themes of adventure and friendship, while also being chock-full of the unexpected twists and events you’d expect from a Sabotage production.

- A world you can touch: Sailing, cooking, fishing, stopping by a tavern to listen to a song or play the infamous tabletop game known as "Wheels"... every system has been designed to deliver an experience that pays respect to retro classics, while rethinking in some areas to offer a smooth and modernized experience.
